Sign Language Mass at St. Mary’s
At the Sunday 11:00 a.m. Mass
Our parish Mission Statement reads: "…in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, we minister with courtesy and compassion to all people…we commit ourselves to welcome and affirm the whole diversity of God's people". Many visitors to the Basilica tell us how much they feel warmly welcomed by our hospitality ministers and by the parishioners attending Mass. To better serve our sisters and brothers in the deaf community and so that they will feel truly welcomed on Sunday, we have procured the services of a sign language interpreter. Each week at the 11:00 a.m. Mass, the scriptures, songs and the homily will be interpreted for the hearing impaired. Please spread the word about this exciting new ministry at St. Mary’s. Invite those whom you think would benefit. Thank you!
- ASL (American Sign Language) Interpreter provided at Sunday 11:00 a.m. Mass
- The interpreter sits at the lectern on Our Lady’s side (right site of the Basilica)
- The first pew on that side is reserved
- Parking is always free when coming to Church for Liturgy at the Diocese parking garage, off 4th Street.
For the past two months, a number of deaf people have been able to participate in the Mass at St. Mary’s through the able assistance of an American Sign Language Interpreter. We have received loving messages from some of these people who tell us how meaningful it is to actually physically attend Mass rather than watch it on television with closed captions. Please invite to Mass any one you may know who could benefit from this ministry. Spread the word!
