Music Ministry
Music
plays an integral role in the liturgical celebrations at the
Basilica. The Music Ministry is led by our Director of Music, Gordon
Stevenson, and includes many people who participate as choir
members, cantors and musicians.
The
Basilica Choir sings regularly at the 9.00 a.m. Mass on Sundays from
September through June.
Rehearsals are held on a Thursday evening from 7.00 p.m. - 9.00 p.m. during Ordinary Time, and additional rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings during Lent and Advent.
The
choir is a diverse group of people, with varying degrees of
experience in formal musical training and a variety of cultural
backgrounds, but who are united wholeheartedly in their love for the
liturgy. Reflecting the demographics of Phoenix and our integrated
liturgies, our choir sings regularly in English, Spanish and Latin,
the beautiful historic language of the Roman Catholic Church.
Musical genres range from contemporary music to traditional choral
repertoire.
The choir also performs concerts each year, usually during the Easter and Christmas seasons.
Our Basilica Schola is a made up of a small group of men who sing regularly at the Saturday 5.00 p.m. Vigil Mass all year round.

In
the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, the assembly are called to
“full conscious and active participation” in the Liturgy, especially
in regard to music. At Saint Mary’s, our congregation is led by our
Cantor, Catherine Dockendorff, united with our choir/schola so that
all of us together may “make a joyful noise unto the Lord”.
